The Indian Team was unable to break its semi-final jinx in World Tournaments and the same happened in the 20-20 World Cup 2022 where India came crashing down against England by 10 wickets at Adelaide due to a 170-run stand between Jos Buttler and Alex Hales. This resulted in a big repercussion.
The Indian Cricket Board selection committee was handed a sacking on Friday. In what can be a shocking accusation, one of the selection committee members has pointed fingers at the board. The Chetan Sharma-led selection panel did not have a great time at the helm not being able to help India win a single multilateral event.
Here is what one of the selectors had to say to Inside sport: “Indian Cricket Board has thrown us under the bus when they clearly know they should take the blame as well. The captaincy decision was not entirely our own. There was constant interference in selection decisions. The rotation policy in place came as advice from the Indian Cricket Board and it was of course logical. But they now blame us for having 8 captains in 9 months. They have made us the scapegoats.”
The board did not support split captaincy - The selector
These were the big allegations that were made by the selector where he said that any selection calls that were made were constantly interfered with by the Indian Cricket Board. The removal of Virat Kohli as captain was not entirely made by the selectors. There were no solutions that were brainstormed to address the fitness issues and injury concerns of the Indian Team.
When he talked about the removal of Kohli from captaincy, here is what he said, “I won’t name anyone or a group. But it was not completely the selection committee’s decision to go with a new captain for all formats. Some of us wanted to have Virat for white-ball formats until the 2023 WC. But ultimately, Virat was removed. Many in the Indian Cricket Board did not support multiple captains for multiple formats,”
When the issue of not having a stable captain came about, he said that it happened due to the current composition of the Indian side and also because of a few other reasons. “And as far as having 8 captains in a year is concerned, it’s important to rotate and rest players. Rohit is leading in all three formats at 35 years of age. KL has been in and out of rehab. So, it’s only natural to go with the player next in line for captaincy,” he added
