South Africa is on a roll to rejuvenate its domestic setup and as a first step, they have come up with a new league. The six-team tournament coined as ‘SA20’ is set to get underway in early 2023. Fans all around the world can draw a familiarity between the teams involved in the Indian T20 League and the new South African league as all teams are owned by Indian T20 League franchises.
The auction for the inaugural edition of the new league took place on Monday (September 19). The teams fought the inaugural battle with the auction card ahead of the mega launch of the tournament. As one could expect, there were some expensive bids from a few teams. MI Cape Town, Jo'Burg Super Kings, Pretoria Capitals, Durban's Super Giants, Sunrisers Eastern Cape and Paarl Royals took part in the auction.

Let’s take a look at five expensive buys from the SA20 auction:
1) Tristan Stubbs – R 9.2 M (INR 4.1 crores) - Sunrisers Eastern Cape
Tristan Stubbs, the hero of the moment, went to Sunrisers Eastern Cape for a whopping R9.2 M (INR 4.1 crore) in the SA20 auction. The 22-year-old is known for his classy timing and any team would love to have him in the brigade.
However, fate has it that he must play for Sunrisers Eastern Cape as they bought him for a whopping amount. Needless to say, it is a worthy addition for them. With a strike rate of 160.65 in the T20s, he’ll go down as a player to watch out for in the tournament.
2) Rilee Rossouw – R 6.9 M (INR 3.1 crores) - Pretoria Capitals
Rilee Rossouw, the South African star, has been in fantastic form of late. He needs to pat himself for all his hard work and it paid off in the auction. Pretoria Capitals went all out in the SA20 auction to pick him up for R 6.9 M (INR 3.1 crore).
It will be a great addition to the Capitals bench, who were struggling to find some experience in the bench before this buy. Notably, Rilee Rossouw has a strike rate of 142.40 in the T20 format.
3) Marco Jansen - R 6.1 M (INR 2.74 crores) - Sunrisers Eastern Cape
Marco Jansen, the fiery young pacer, made his way to the Sunrisers Eastern Cape bench. The team bought the aggressive pacer for a whopping R 6.1 M (INR 2.74 crore) at the SA20 auction.
Speaking of his records in the T20 format, Jansen has amassed as many as 17 wickets at an economy of around eight. The pacer can fit it at any team, and Sunrisers will have another feather in their cap.
4) Wayne Parnell - R 5.6 M (INR 2.52 crores) - Pretoria Capitals
Wayne Parnell is all set to make a thundering comeback in a domestic league as Pretoria Capitals have bought him in the SA20 auction. The Capitals think tank bought him for a whopping R 5.6 M (INR 2.52 crore) and his records speak for himself.
The 33-year-old has done well for the Proteas in the recent outings and against Ireland in specific. With this buy, Pretoria Capitals have sorted out the lead pacer issue.
5) Sisanda Magala - R 5.4 m (INR 2.43 crores) - Sunrisers Eastern Cape
As one could assume, Sunrisers Eastern Cape made most of the expensive buys in the auction. Sisanda Magala is one of the most underrated bowlers and he got his due in the SA20 auction.
Sunrisers bench took cognizance of his talent and bought him into the squad for R 5.4 M (INR 2.43 crore). He is a classy addition to the squad and the bench looks threatening after the auction.
