The Indian Cricket Team are done and dusted with their series against Australia. The next big assignment for Rohit Sharma is the 2023 ODI World Cup. The 36-year-old has a huge chance to win India its 3rd World Cup in front of the home fans.

While the fans are focused on the upcoming 2023 ODI World Cup, there is a need to look at the future. Rohit Sharma is likely to give up captaincy in at least one of the two formats of the game. Hardik Pandya is all but confirmed to be captain of the T20 side. The question thus arises on the ODI and Test format.

Former India player Robin Uthappa has come up with a radical name as the next India skipper. Uthappa was part of the team in 2007 when Rohit Sharma made his T20 debut during the World Cup.

Robin Uthappa's pick as the next Indian captain

Former Indian star Robin Uthappa was recently seen sharing his thoughts on his YouTube Channel. The 38-year-old picked Shreyas Iyer as the next skipper for the Indian team. According to Robin Uthappa, the 28-year-old is the ideal candidate to succeed Rohit Sharma.

Speaking on his YouTube Channel, Robin Uthappa said, "Shreyas Iyer, what a sigh of relief! It’s been a long time in the making. We have always recognized him as a top-tier player. In my estimation, he has the potential to lead the Indian team in the future."

Shreyas Iyer made an amazing comeback to the Indian after months of fitness issues. Iyer played only one game in the 2023 Asia Cup. After getting run out cheaply in Mohali, Iyer struck a century in Indore. The 28-year-old scored a fighting 48 during the 3rd ODI in Rajkot.

Uthappa further said, "Shreyas is an incredibly consistent player. And he demonstrated precisely why with that outstanding century against Australia. The tempo at which he batted, his impeccable control, and his strong connection with the ball- it was all on display. After a couple of low scores and sudden injury setback, it’s not easy to come back like that, It truly reflects his character."

Shreyas Iyer is expected to play a huge role for India during the 2023 ODI World Cup. The 28-year-old is slated to bat at number 4 due to his penchant for playing well against spin.
