Royal Challengers Bangalore and Kolkata Knight Riders faced each other to kick off the second half of the 2023 Indian Premier League season. Royal Challengers Bangalore won the toss and chose to bowl first, which is an ideal decision at a ground like M Chinnaswamy Stadium. N Jagadeesan and Jason Roy started well as they waved off Mohammed Siraj and David Willey.

Jason Roy and Jagadeesan formed a formidable opening partnership of 83 runs before Vijaykumar Vyshak took the openers out, which brought the in-form duo of Nitish Rana and Venkatesh Iyer to the crease. The bowlers slowed the run rate down, but the batters made sure that they were looking for boundaries to take their side to a good total.

Nitish Rana got going well and was dismissed in the death overs by Wannindu Hasaranga after a brilliant catch taken by Vyshak. Venkatesh Iyer was also dismissed by Hasaranga after the latter wanted to hit a googly but was caught by Maxwell. Rinku Singh and David Wiese ensured Kolkata Knight Riders reach a total of 200/5 after the dangerous Andre Russell was removed by Siraj. It was a good total on this ground and something that gave the bowlers a fighting chance.

How did the Royal Challengers Bangalore chase pan out?

Virat Kohli and Faf du Plessis started off well and were onto the pace bowlers from the start as they looked for boundaries. Suyash Sharma was the lethal bowler for the Kolkata franchise as he scalped two top-order wickets in the form of Faf du Plessis and Shahbaz Ahmed. Glenn Maxwell came in and went out shortly afterwards as he was dismissed by his nemesis Varun Chakravarthy.

Virat Kohli was still at the crease and he was joined by Mahipal Lomror to take the innings forward after the side lost early wickets. Lomror scored some valuable runs as he scored an important cameo of 34 runs in just 18 balls before Varun Chakravarthy dismissed him and then in the following over Andre Russell scalped the important wicket of Virat Kohli.

Suyash Prabhudesai lost his wicket due to a mix-up and that was the last formidable batting pair for the Royal Challengers Bangalore. Dinesh Karthik was then joined by Hasaranga in the need of a miracle at their home ground. Russell took out Hasaranga at a crucial moment and Bangalore looked set to lose their penultimate home game of the season. Kolkata closed out the game and won against the home side by 21 runs.
