India will be happy with their batting efforts after putting 289 runs on the board for the loss of three wickets on the third day of the final Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. Still trailing by 191 runs, the hosts will look to add some quick runs tomorrow with a defendable lead. India were riding on the wings of Shubman Gill, who scored his second century in the longest format of the game. The right-handed batter stepped up and delivered a magnificent 128 (235) to keep India in the contest.

Gill replaced KL Rahul who struggled to find form in the first two Tests. The 23-year-old has recently been in stunning form in the shorter formats of the game, scoring centuries and a double century against New Zealand in ODIs. He was knocking on selectors' doors with his talent, and at the right time, the former Indian Test vice-captain was going through his worst phase. Gill, however, was not able to perform well in the third Test at Indore, but responded in style in Ahmedabad.

Gill-Pujara 100+ partnership brought India back into the game

The youngster just scored his maiden Test century in India and continues to prove that he is the future of Indian cricket in all formats of the game. Gill put up a 100+ partnership with senior batter Cheteshwar Pujara (42 off 121) and set the stage for the rest of the batters before being dismissed by Nathan Lyon.

"It feels great to score a hundred here. This is my Indian T20 League home ground and glad to get some runs here. The pitch was pretty good to bat on. Anything happening off the pitch was off the rough area. I was looking to pick singles whenever possible. Honestly, I was still trying to be positive and was kee looking for singles. We are three down for almost 300. We would look to get a big score on Day 4," the opening batter said after Day 3.

India will resume Day 3 on 289 with Virat Kohli and Ravindra Jadeja looking to build a long partnership. Kohli, unbeaten on 59, hit his first Test fifty since January 2022, Jadeja at the crease with 16* off 54 balls.
