Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) defeated Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) by five runs in a last-ball thriller in the 2023 Indian Premier League (IPL) on Thursday, May 4. A win was crucial for both teams in the bottom half of the points table, and KKR bowlers held their nerves to pull of an incredible victory in an away game.

KKR won the toss and chose to bat first, but they got off to a terrible start as pacer Marco Janssen dismissed Rahmanullah Gurbaz for a duck and Venkatesh Iyer for seven in the second over. Jason Roy and skipper Nitish Rana then tried to build a partnership, but the English batter was dismissed for 20 runs in the fifth over by Karthik Tyagi. The wicket of dangerous Roy restricted KKR’s powerplay score to 49-3.

After losing back-to-back wickets, Rana and Rinku Singh steadied the ship and brought KKR back into the game. The two left-handers put on a 60-plus partnership before Rana was dismissed for 42 off 31 in the 12th over. Rinku was losing partners at the other end, but the 25-year-old kept going with some brilliant shots and ensured their team reach a respectable score of 171-9.

KKR bowlers dominated the final 30 balls

In reply, the KKR bowlers took three wickets -Abhishek Sharma, Mayank Agarwal and Rahul Tripathi - in the powerplay and gave the visitors a great start. Harry Brook also joined the top-orders after being dismissed for a four-ball duck in the seventh over. When it appeared that the hosts were about to collapse, skipper Aiden Markram and Heinrich Klaasen played brilliantly, adding a 70-run partnership to keep them in the hunt.

Shardul Thakur broke the dangerous partnership by removing Klaasen for 36 off 20 in the 15th over. When SRH needed 38 from 30 balls, Vaibhav Arora made a huge breakthrough in the 17th over by dismissing Aiden Markram for 41 off 40 balls. The KKR bowlers took the game to 9 needed from 6 balls and Varun Chakaravarthy delivered a spectacular over to clinch the victory by five runs.
