Chennai Super Kings (CSK) registered their fourth win in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 with a comfortable 7-wicket victory over Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) on Friday, April 21. SRH's losing streak against CSK at Chepauk continues as the latter hunt down a below-par total of 135 with eight balls remaining.
A clinical bowling performance by the CSK spinners in the first innings helped their batters play without much pressure on a slightly two-paced wicket. They restricted SRH to a mere score of 134 runs. Ruturaj Gaikwad and Devon Conway got the hosts off to a flying start, putting on a 60-run powerplay partnership, with 23 runs coming off in the sixth over. However, after that, the SRH spinners and Umran Malik tightened the screws.
CSK lost their first wicket, Gaikwad, in the form of a run-out in the 11th over. Ajinkya Rahane struggled to get going and was eventually removed by Mayank Markande in the 15th over for 9 runs off 10 balls. However, these wickets did not bring much tension in the CSK camp as there were enough strikers left to chase the average total.
The young leg-spinner Markande claimed his second wicket of the night when he dismissed Ambati Rayudu on the final ball of the 17th over. With more than two overs remaining after Rayudu's wicket, CSK needed just 13 runs to win, and Conway, who remained unbeaten on 77, and Moeen Ali on 6, pushed their team cross the finish line with eight balls to spare.
10 overs of spin brought CSK back into the game
Earlier, after losing the toss and being asked to bat first, SRH got off to a decent start to their innings. The visitors were 70/1 in the first 9 overs, and once the CSK spinners took charge, in the last 11 overs, they could manage just 64 runs, losing six wickets in that phase. The hosts made an incredible comeback as Ravindra Jadeja led from the front with three wickets for just 22 runs in his four overs.
Abhishek Sharma and Harry Brook put up a 35-run partnership for the first wicket, providing the side with a solid base. SRH were in control until Jadeja took his second wicket in the 12th over, dismissing Rahul Tripathi. The continued fall of wickets put pressure on the remaining batters, which made them play slow innings and eventually lose wickets. Abhishek's 26-ball 34, Tripathi's 21 and short cameo from Marco Jansen and Washington Sundar helped the team reach 134 in 20 overs.
