Bangladesh beat India by six runs in the final Super 4 match of the ongoing Asia Cup 2023. India has already qualified for the final and will meet the co-hosts, Sri Lanka in Colombo. It was a dead rubber match for both teams as India made five changes, including the likes of Virat Kohli, Kuldeep Yadav, and Jasprit Bumrah.

India won the toss and invited Bangladesh to bat first. Batting first, the Bangla Tigers scored 265 runs for the loss of 8 wickets, with skipper Shakib Al Hasan and Towhid Hridoy were their highest run scorer. Shubman Gill was the lone fighter for Team India.

Shubman Gill's fight goes in vain

After being invited to bat first, the top-order problems continued for Bangladesh. They lost their four wickets for just 59 runs. Skipper Shakib Al Hasan (80 runs in 85 balls) and Towhid Hridoy (54 runs in 81 runs) made a 100-run partnership, giving Bangladesh a defendable score of 265 runs on the difficult wicket of R Premedasa Stadium. Shardul Thakur was the pick of the bowlers for India, he picked up three wickets along with him Shami picked up two wickets.

In reply, India lost their skipper Rohit Sharma for a duck. Debutant Tilak Varma did not have a dream debut as he got out for just five runs. Shubman Gill fought back for India as he scored a brilliant 121 runs off 133 deliveries. But he did not get any support from any other batters. India was never in the game as they lost wickets at regular intervals. In the end, Axar Patel's fighting 42 runs off 34 balls kept the seven-time champions in the game. With his wicket, India lost all hope.

Rohit Sharma after the loss stated, on the five changes, "We wanted to give some game time to the guys, keeping the bigger picture in mind. Not compromising on how we wanted to play this game. Get in some players who are likely to play in the World Cup. Axar batted brilliantly, but couldn't finish. He showed a lot of character. But credit to the Bangladesh bowlers. Not to forget, Gill's hundred was brilliant. He backs his game; he knows exactly how he wants to play. Pretty clear on what he wants to do for the team. Look at his form over the last year. Pretty solid against the new ball. Works really hard; there's no optional practice for Gill."
