The third Day of the first Test between India and Australia got underway on Saturday. India resumed their innings on 321/7 with Ravindra Jadeja and Axar Patel at the crease. Jadeja fell early in the day, however, Patel took the Indian total to 400 in their first innings. Indian spin-attack led by Ravichandran Ashwin were all over Aussies right from the word go.

The off-spinner drew first blood for India as he dismissed the in-form batter Usman Khawaja, who edged the full delivery straight to Virat Kohli at first slip. The 36-year-old further created another chance as he found the edge of Warner’s bat but it was put down by Kohli at first slip.

However, the catch-drop didn’t bring him in low spirits as he continued to hunt Australian batters one by one. He finally got Warner’s scalp as he trapped him in front of the stumps giving Australia their third blow. He further picked up three more wickets in the same fashion and completed his five-wicket haul in just his 10th over.

Alex Carey once again got dismissed by the off-spinner who once again attempted a reverse sweep against him and got trapped in front of the stumps. It was the 31st five-wicket haul of his career as the Aussie batters fell prey to their old nemesis.

Ashwin became the second-fastest bowler to pick 450 Test wickets

Earlier in the first innings, the Tamil Nadu spinner became the second fastest bowler to pick 450 wickets in the history of Test cricket as he reached the landmark in 89 Tests. He’s only behind the legendary Muttiah Muralitharan who achieved the milestone in 80 Tests. Apart from this, Ashwin is the fastest bowler to reach the landmark of 250 and 300 wickets in Test cricket.

In the first innings, Ashwin finished with figures of 3/42 in 15.5 overs. India won the first Test by an innings and 132 runs and went 1-0 up in the four-match series. Ashwin finished with figures of 5/37 in 12 overs. India need to win three Tests in the series to seal their spot in the final of the World Test Championship.

Meanwhile, Twitter was abuzz with reactions on Ashwin’s fifer. Here are some of the Tweets:
