Day 4 of the second Test ended with India in a commanding position, but all four results are possible on a thrilling final day in Port of Spain, Trinidad. India need 8 more wickets to clinch their first series in the 2023-25 World Test Championship, while West Indies need 289 runs on Monday.
Chasing 365, Windies lost two wickets, with Ravichandran Ashwin striking both times. The veteran spinner once again dismissed rival captain Kraigg Brathwaite (28 off 52) to start proceedings, and then removed Krik McKenzie for a four-ball duck. Tagenarine Chanderpaul and Jermaine Blackwood then ensured the hosts did not lose any more wickets, finishing the day at 76/2 in 32 overs.
Earlier, pacer Mohammed Siraj ran through West Indies lower order to pick up his second Test fifer and quickly wrap up the Windies' first innings. Based on their batting performance on Day 3, it appeared like West Indies would drag their innings on Day 4, but India managed to take the last five wickets in just 7.4 overs in the morning session.
India adopted England's 'bazball' approach in the second innings
After taking a respectable 183-run lead, the Indian openers came out all guns blazing to extend their lead at a rapid pace, with rain trying to play spoilsport. Rohit Sharm and Yashasvi Jaiswal added 98-runs inside 12 overs but both got dismissed in successive overs. The Indian captain registered another half-century, while Jaiswal scored 38 off 30 balls.
However, it was not Virat Kohli who came out to bat alongside Shubman Gill at No. 4. Wicketkeeper batter Ishan Kishan was promoted up the order and registered his maiden Test fifty off just 33 deliveries. As soon as the southpaw reached the 50-run mark, Rohit declared the innings with 364 on the board.
Ashwin looked in good touch and will be aiming to repeat his first Test heroics as the batting might get tougher on the final day. West Indies might seek some help from the weather as well if they can't cross the finish line. However, an intriguing Day 5 lies ahead for cricket fans.
