On Sunday, October 15, Afghanistan beat the defending champions England in the ODI World Cup 2023, at the Arun Jaitely Stadium, New Delhi, as they opened their account in the ongoing mega event. They performed superbly with the ball in the capital city. It was a shocking and upsetting loss for the 2019 winners. They are one side who have had upsets in almost every version of the grand event.
Mujeeb Ur Rahman earned the Player of the Match award for his sensational bowling display against the defending champions. He picked three wickets all of them were big names, Jonny Bairstow, Joe Root, and well-settled Harry Brook. His spin partner Rashid Khan also picked three wickets. The former dedicated his Man of the Match award to the victims of the earthquake that happened in western Afghanistan. It was a magnitude 6.3 earthquake that killed two people and it has taken at least 1,000 lives in the last weeks.
After the match, Mujeeb was seen giving a hug to a young Afghanistan fan. The child came toward the spinner and he got emotional and started crying as he gave a tight hug to the bowler. Rashid also discussed in the post-match about the victims and both of them stated that this win will be for them.

-Rashid Khan is a moderate Muslim.
-That’s why we Indians always support Afghanistan because they respect us and never talk ill about India.
This proves Indian don’t hate all Muslims.#AFGvsENG #WorldCup2023… pic.twitter.com/LD0mtUrJXK
It’s a great achievement for the whole team, we worked hard for this day: Mujeeb Ur Rahman
After the match, Mujeeb said, "Very proud moment to be here in the World Cup and beating the champions. It’s a great achievement for the whole team, we worked hard for this day. We beat such a big team. It was a wonderful performance from the bowlers and the batters. As a spinner, it’s pretty hard to bowl in the powerplay, you have only two fielders outside."
"This is for the people back home who have been affected by the earthquake. As players and as a team, I wanted to dedicate my award to them."
Afghanistan will play New Zealand, on Wednesday, October 18 at the MA Chidambaram Stadium, Chennai.
