India continued their winning streak in the ODI World Cup 2023 by winning their 10th consecutive match of the tournament against New Zealand by 70 runs in the 1st semi-final of the World Cup.

India lost the 2019 ODI World Cup semi-final in a close encounter against the same New Zealand at Manchester, and yesterday, India finally got over the Kiwi hoodoo. After losing two consecutive ODI World Cup semi-finals in 2015 and 2019, India finally got over the line on their home turf in Mumbai.

In a high-scoring encounter where more than 700 runs and three centuries were scored, Mohammad Shami was the pick of the players who picked up seven wickets in his quota of 10 overs. India won the toss and batted first on a placid Wankhede pitch and put up a mammoth total of 397 runs courtesy of the centuries of Virat Kohli and Shreyas Iyer.

Ravindra Jadeja was the pick of the fielders as he took three catches at crucial junctures of the match and, eventually, was adjudged the most awaited ‘Fielder of the Match’ medal, which has taken social media by storm in this World Cup.

It was a momentous occasion as India finally managed to qualify for their first semi-finals since 2011. It was a special victory for the Indian Cricket team and the fans, and the significance of the win was evident on the faces of the Indian players and coaching staff as could be seen in a viral behind-the-scenes video. Everybody was seen soaking the magnificent victory, and emotions were high, not only among the fans but among the players too.

Virat creates history with the 50th ODI ton

It was a momentous occasion as Virat Kohli with his 50th ODI ton became the player with the most number of ODI centuries surpassing the great Sachin Tendulkar in front of the legend himself at a star-studded and jam-packed Wankhede Stadium.

Sachin Tendulkar himself congratulated Virat Kohli on breaking his record and reminisced the day he saw Virat for the first and how it was evident to him that this young lad would go to places.

New Zealand put on a fight with a century and half-century from Daryl Mitchell and Kane Williamson but in the end, the target proved to be too much for the Kiwi batters and India eventually won by 70 runs.
