The 29th game of the ODI World Cup 2023 saw India totally outplay defending champions England. It was a packed house in Lucknow as India and England played their sixth game of the ODI World Cup 2023 tournament.
The Indian win on Sunday means the two-time World Cup winners have almost secured their place in the semi-finals of the tournament. England on the other hand has been knocked out of the ODI World Cup 2023 tournament.
Jos Buttler and his side came into the game needing to win this key game. England was in the 10th place before the start of the game. After winning the toss Jos Buttler had no hesitation in asking India to bat first. There were no changes to the playing XI from both sides from their previous game.
Indian cricket team lands the knockout punch on England
Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill gave the Indian team a flying start in the first few overs of the game. The Indian skipper in particular took particular liking to David Willey hitting him for boundaries.
From 26 for no loss the Indian team lost three wickets in just 47 balls to be reduced to 40 for 3. Chris Woakes went through Gill’s defence to send him back to the hut for 9. David Willey then got the key wicket of Virat Kohli for a duck caught by Ben Stokes. Shreyas Iyer then became the second wicket for Woakes caught by Mark Wood for 4.
Rohit Sharma stood tall as he stitched a 91-run stand with KL Rahul for the 4th wicket. KL Rahul was out for 39 against the run of play. The Indian skipper got going as he top-scored with 87 runs. Once Adil Rashid got rid of Rohit the Indian team kept losing wickets.
Suryakumar Yadav batted well to score 49 runs in his second game of the ODI World Cup. Yadav was unlucky to miss his 50 by 1 run when he was caught by Woakes off Willey. India ended with 229/9 from their 50 overs.
Chasing 230 to win, Jonny Bairstow and Dawid Malan came out all gun blazing in a bid to win the game. The opening stand came in just 23 balls before Jasprit Bumrah struck twice in two balls. Bumrah first bowled Malan for 16 and then got Joe Root for a first ball duck.
The introduction of Mohammed Shami got more trouble for England as they lost Ben Stokes for a duck and Jonny Bairstow for 14. Kuldeep Yadav then got the big wicket of Jos Buttler bowled with a beauty for 10. Moeen Ali and Liam Livingstone added 29 runs for the 7th wicket before Shami got Moeen Ali out for 15.
Liam Livingstone then fell for 27 when he tried to sweep Kuldeep Yadav and was given out LBW. Ravindra Jadeja had earlier picked his first wicket when he had Chris Woakes out stumped for 10.
The winning moment came when Bumrah got the final wicket of Mark Wood by 100 runs. England have been knocked out of the tournament as Shami did the damage with 4 wickets with the ball.
