South Africa begin their World Cup campaign with a huge victory against Sri Lanka. On a flat wicket, South Africa batted first and posted a mammoth total of 428 runs and created the record for the highest team score in the ODI World Cup. There was no stopping the batters in Delhi and the batters from both the teams batted extremely well in their stay in the middle.

South Africa lost their captain Temba Bavuma early. But there was no stopping the South African team in the match. The duo of Quinton De Kock and Rassie Van Der Dussen put up 204-run stand for the third wicket. While De Kock was butchering the bowlers from his end, Van Der Dussen played the role of anchor to perfection and helped South Africa to build the innings.

De Kock scored 100 runs in 84 balls and Van Der Dussen scored 108 runs in 110 balls. What followed it was the mayhem from Aiden Markram. The South African batter scored 106 runs in 54 balls, of which, the hundred came in 49 balls, the fastest for a batter in the history of the ODI World Cup. Heinrich Klaasen and David Miller scored crucial cameos towards the end.

Sri Lanka's brave fight falls short in World Cup match against South Africa

The knocks from all these batters propelled South Africa to a mammoth total of 428 runs in their 50 overs. Chasing the target, Sri Lanka suffered the big blows. Sri Lanka lost both its openers, Kusal Perera and Pathum Nissanka early. But Kusal Mendis was off to a flier in the powerplay overs. The dynamic batter launched the attack by hitting 8 sixes in the powerplay overs.

The dismissal of Mendis did not stop Sri Lanka from trying to win the match. The likes of Charith Asalanka and Dasun Shanaka scored fifty for Sri Lanka and tried their best to keep their team alive in the match. But it seemed like a bit too huge for them, as 429 was too much to chase. South Africa won by 102 runs.
