In match number eight of the ODI World Cup 2023, Pakistan won the match against Sri Lanka by six wickets in just 48.2 overs. This is also the highest run chase in the history of the ODI World Cups. But this match will be widely known for the efforts that Mohammed Rizwan put in and the way he chased down the target. With this win, the Pakistan team have now climbed to the second spot by winning two out of two games, and along the way, they also have an impressive net run rate of + 0.927.

 Initially, Sri Lankan skipper Dasun Shanaka won the toss and elected to bat first. However, Sri Lanka did not have the best of starts as they Kusal Perera (0) in the second over of the innings. But after that, Pathum Nissanka and Kusal Mendis took the attack back to the opposition bowlers with some fearless hitting. The duo stitched a brilliant partnership of 102 runs for the second wicket. Unfortunately, Nissanka was dismissed for a well-made 51 runs but Mendis continued his onslaught along with Sadeera Samarawickrama. Both the batters went absolutely berserk scoring the 111 runs in just 70 deliveries. However, once Mendis (122 off just 77 deliveries) was dismissed the Sri Lankan innings went onto a decline despite Samarawickrama (108) registering his maiden ODI ton.

There was hardly any contribution from the lower-order batter from Sri Lanka which resulted in Pakistan restricting the Sri Lankan team to 344 which at one stage looked like 370 plus. Hasan Ali was the star with the ball for Pakistan who took four wickets in his 10 overs and bowled beautifully at the death.

Pakistan registers a record run chase

Chasing this humongous target of 345 runs, the Pakistan team had an awful start to the chase as they lost both Imam-ul-Haq (12) and Babar Azam (10) inside the first batting powerplay. But after that, it was all Abdullah Shafique and Mohammad Rizwan who showed their prowess in chasing down this huge total. During the partnership, Shafique was the one who was the aggressor while Rizwan was happily playing the second fiddle. Both the batters complemented each other and played according to the situation. In the process, the opener Shafique registered his maiden century but was not able to carry forward as he was dismissed at 113 runs courtesy of a brilliant catch from Dushan Hemantha.

But this wicket did not put any pressure on Rizwan, he instead stepped up on the gas and made the run chase look easy. Rizwan delivered a brilliant and match-winning innings, scoring an unbeaten 131 off only 121 deliveries, featuring eight boundaries and three sixes. Despite experiencing leg cramps, the right-handed batter guided Pakistan to their highest successful run chase in ODI World Cup history. In recognition of his outstanding performance, the wicketkeeper-batsman was honoured with the Player of the Match award.

 Let us look at how Twitter has reacted to his monumental win from Pakistan;
