1996 World Cup winners, Sri Lanka have played three games in the ODI World Cup 2023 so far. The men from the Emerald Isle have lost all three games and this has seen the panic button being pressed. Veteran batters Angelo Mathews and Dushmanta Chameera have been called up.
The Sri Lankans find themselves at the bottom of the table with zero points from three games played. To add to the misery their regular skipper Dasun Shanaka is back home after getting injured during the game against Pakistan in Hyderabad.
The Lankans began their ODI World Cup 2023 campaign against South Africa in New Delhi. This was followed by games against Pakistan and Australia. Once considered the powerhouse of Cricket, Sri Lanka now are on the brink of elimination from the tournament.
More firepower for the struggling Sri Lankan team
Former skipper and veteran batter Angelo Mathews has been given a call-up for the squad for the ongoing ODI World Cup 2023 campaign. The 36-year-old is set to link up with his side on Thursday ahead of their game on Saturday against the Netherlands.
Fast bowler Dushmanta Chameera is another player who has been called up to the Sri Lankan side. The right-arm fast bowler will act as a cover for Lahiru Kumar and Matheesha Pathirana.
In a message posted on Twitter, the Sri Lankan Board wrote both players will be travelling reserves. The statement further read “Sri Lanka Cricket wishes to announce that Angelo Mathews and Dushmantha Chameera will join the team in India as travelling reserves”
The SLC statement also stated “The Sri Lanka Cricket Selectors took this decision to ensure that the team has ready replacements in place to face contingencies, such as an injury to an existing squad member. Accordingly, @Angelo69Mathews and @dushmantha05 will join the team tomorrow”
Sri Lanka will take on the Netherlands on Saturday in their fourth game which is to be played in Lucknow. This will be followed by games against England and Afghanistan in Bangalore and Pune. India will take on Sri Lanka in Mumbai on 2nd November in a repeat of the 2011 ODI World Cup final. Sri Lanka finished off with games against New Zealand and Bangladesh.
