Mohammed Shami has been in sublime form in the ODI World Cup 2023 and has taken 23 wickets in just 6 matches. But his latest 7-wicket haul in the semi-finals against New Zealand, led India to their first ODI semi-final since 2011 has made him a national hero.
India’s bowling in this World Cup has by far exceeded expectations of fans and cricket experts and Mohammed Shami has been the pick of India’s bowling in the tournament. Shami was benched in the initial stages of the tournament. Hardik Pandya’s mid-tournament injury made way for Shami in playing XI and didn’t look back after that.
Shami has been almost unplayable in the matches so far, with his upright seam presentation and right line and lengths he has been a menace for the batters in a tournament where pitches have been batting friendly and over 600 sixes have been hit.
Shami’s dominance with the ball in this World Cup can be ascertained by the fact that he tops the board as a leading wicket-taker in the tournament. Although, Australia’s Adam Zampa has played 4 more matches than Mohammed Shami, Zampa occupies the second position on the list with 22 wickets.
To honor Shami for his performances and inspire the next generation, Yogi Adityanath’s government at Uttar Pradesh has decided a construct a small stadium in the Amroha district which is Shami’s native place.
"We have been sending a proposal to construct a mini stadium in the village of Mohammed Shami. In that proposal, we are also planning to innstall an open gymnasium. We have sufficient land there,” Rajesh Tyagi (IAS), District Magistrate of Amroha, said.
“The (Uttar Pradesh) government passed instructions to construct 20 stadiums across the state and district Amroha’s stadium was also selected for it,” Tyagi added.
