Sri Lanka was knocked out of the ODI World Cup 2023 on Monday after their loss to Bangladesh in New Delhi on Monday. Coming into the game after a massive 302-run loss to India, the Sri Lankans needed to win the game to keep their little hopes alive.

Kusal Mendis and his team were asked to bat first after Shakib Al Hasan won the toss. Tanzim Hasan Shakib replaced Mustafizur Rahman. Sri Lanka made two changes as well with Kusal Perera and Dhananjaya De Silva making a return to the playing XI.

Bangladesh were already knocked out of the ODI World Cup tournament after their loss to Pakistan last week. A win on Monday will help Bangladesh in a bid to qualify for the 2025 Champions Trophy event.

Bangladesh won a close contest against Sri Lanka

Batting first Sri Lanka were all out for 279 runs in the 50th over of the innings. Charith Asalanka top scored with 108 runs off 105 balls with 6 fours and 5 sixes. Pathum Nissanka and Sadeera Samarawickrama scored 41 each.

The biggest moment of the game was when Angelo Mathews was given ‘Timed Out’ in the 25th over of the innings. The veteran Sri Lankan batter was dismayed at the way he was dismissed and did not hide his frustration as he was walking back to the pavilion.

Dhananjaya De Silva and Maheesh Theekshana scored 34 and 22 each to help the Lankans reach a decent-looking score on the board. Tanzim Hasan Shakib picked 3 wickets for Bangladesh while Shoriful Islam and Shakib Al Hasan picked two wickets each.

Dilshan Madushanka was breathing fire with the new ball as he removed the Bangladeshi openers. Litton Das was out for 23 while Tanzid Hasan was out for six early in the chase. Nazmul Shanto and Shakib Al Hasan then added 169 runs for the third wicket to bring Bangladesh to the gates of an easy win.

Angelo Mathews then got the wicket of Shakib Al Hasan and gave him a proper send-off. Bangladeshi skipper scored 82 runs off 85 balls, while the top scorer was Nazmul Shanto who was out for 90 runs. Maheesh Theekshana then got two wickets to make the match more interesting. The winning runs came when four leg-byes ended the Lankan hopes of reaching the semi-finals of the tournament.
