The biggest match of the year is just around the corner, and it’s the old foes India (IND) and Australia (AUS) that will yet again face each other after that heartbreaking 2003 ODI World Cup final in South Africa that broke the hearts of millions of Indian cricket fans as Australia beat Sourav Ganguly led India by 125 runs. After 20 years, both top teams of the world are up against each other in another final of the ODI World Cup 2023 at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.
It’s been 20 years since both these teams faced each other in the finals of a World Cup, and much has changed since then. It has been almost like a role reversal. In 2003, Australia was the hot favourite, whereas in 2023, India was the firm favourite.
In 2003, the Australians entered the finals with an unbeaten streak of 10 matches, whereas the Indian team came into the match, winning 8 of their World Cup matches, and in this World Cup, it’s almost the opposite. But as they say when the two best teams play, what has happened in the doesn’t matter and the team who plays well on the day emerges victorious.
Pitch and Playing Conditions
Both the teams will play in front of a massive 1,30,000 Ahmedabad crowd and it will test the players both physically and mentally. The pitch at the Narendra Modi Stadium is expected to be a bit on the drier side. It will be a hard well-rolled black soil wicket and not much bounce similar to what was dished out in the match against Pakistan.
Batting in the powerplay will be crucial as the ball is expected to come out slow onto the bat once it gets a bit soft and spinners will play an important role for both the teams. The weather is expected to be around 26 degrees Celsius with rain unlikely to come into play.
Players to Watch Out For
India
- Shubhman Gill: The prince of Ahmedabad has a scintillating record in Ahmedabad and has been in sublime form in the last year. The recent series against Australia went well for Shubhman Gill where he scored a hundred and half-century against Australia.
- Ravindra Jadeja: If the wicket is providing some turn, then Ravindra Jadeja's accuracy becomes too hot to handle and will also play a major role in the finals.
- Virat Kohli: You can leave out Virat Kohli against Australia at such a big stage and when he has been churning runs like anything in the tournament then he becomes a must-have in your team.
Australia
- Travis Head: When we talk of impact players, he is currently the most dangerous batter in the Australian team especially in the powerplay. His bowling ability provides another dimension to Head’s utility.
- Adam Zampa: In recent years, he has been one of the most successful spinners against Australia, and on the Ahmedabad wicket he could play an important role for the Australian team.
- Steve Smith: His record against India has been phenomenal in the past and can prove to be dangerous in the finals.
