Virat Kohli scored a fine knock of 88 runs on a sporting Wankhede track after losing Rohit Sharma on the second ball of the match against Sri Lanka in the ODI World Cup 2023. Though Kohli had his share of lucks in the innings of 88 runs, he played some breath-taking drives in a crucial second-wicket partnership with Shubhman Gill. The 35-year-old is a contemporary great and his records speak for themselves.
In this World Cup, Kohli has missed three ODI centuries as he was dismissed at the scores of 85, 95, and 88 against Australia, New Zealand, and Sri Lanka, respectively. But he has got India out of trouble against Australia and New Zealand by playing a tremendous knock under immense pressure.
Sachin Tendulkar is arguably the greatest batter India has produced to date and the Little Master has 49 ODI tons to his name. But this insurmountable record is now in danger as Virat Kohli, who considers Sachin Tendulkar as his cricketing idol, is just one century to match his idol’s record of scoring the most number of centuries in One Day International Cricket.
He currently has 48 centuries to his name in just 286 matches, whereas Sachin Tendulkar took 463 innings to achieve that feat, which makes Virat Kohli a legend in himself. But to all those who still have doubts about his greatness and compare him to his modern contemporaries, Mohammad Amir has a befitting reply.
Kohli is not a minnow basher- Amir
Mohammad Amir is someone who has played with Virat Kohli quite a bit and also has got the better of him a few times during his International career. But off the field, both the stalwarts of the game have immense respect for each other. While Kohli has publicly admitted that Mohammad Amir has troubled him quite a bit, Mohammad Amir on the other hand has been full of praises for Kohli and has expressed his admiration for Kohli in public many times.
In a conversation on Geo News, Amir provided a strong reply to those who were drawing comparisons between Kohli and other prominent batsmen. He stated that if the Indian superstar had the opportunity to play against weaker teams like Nepal, Netherlands, Zimbabwe, and Bangladesh, he would have surpassed Tendulkar's record for the most ODI centuries a long time ago.
Replying to the critics Amir said, “"I don't know why people keep comparing Virat Kohli; any comparison is stupid. Secondly, you have to look at the player's intent. He was playing ball-to-ball (against Sri Lanka), and he was trying.
"If Virat Kohli played series against Netherlands, Nepal, Bangladesh, and Zimbabwe then he would have broken Sachin Tendulkar's record by now. He doesn't play against these teams," Amir said on the show"
