Jasprit Bumrah came back well in the final of the ODI World Cup 2023. After going wayward in thr first over of the match, Bumrah bowled tighter lines and attacked the stumps more often. Australia raced away to 41/1 after the first 4 overs. Mitchell Marsh and Travis Head got going in the the first half of the powerplay. What followed it was the best of Bumrah.
In the initial spell of Bumrah, he got the ball to swing, but could not quite control it. As a result, Bumrah went for some runs early in the innings. In the first over of the match, Bumrah conceded a whopping 15 runs. After that, in his next 4 overs, the Indian pacer gave only 6 runs. Most importantly, Bumrah got two big wickets in the second half of the powerplay overs.
At first, Bumrah set Mitchell Marsh for the dismissal well. The right-arm pacer bowled towards the stumps and forced Marsh to play false shots. As Bumrah bowled a wider delivery slightly short of the length, Marsh sensed an opportunity to free his arms. In an attempt to hit a boundary, Marsh got an underage, which went straight to the wicketkeeper behind the stumps.
Jasprit Bumrah gets the big wicket of Steve Smith
The wicket of Marsh pumped the players and the crowd. There were huge cheers as the wicket of Marsh fell. The crowd went literally behind the Indian pacers. Bumrah got fired up by it and bowled a very good spell. In the second half of the powerplay. Bumrah bowled a good length delivery towards the stumps of Smith. The Australian batter could not read it and missed it totally.
As the Indian bowler and fielders appealed for the dismissal, the umpire was happy to declare it out. Smith thought of reviewing the decision but eventually ended up not opting for it. As it turned out, the replays showed that the impact of the ball was outside off. Had Smith taken the review, he could have survived. But it was not to be.
