‘Netherlands achi kheli ’ – Fans react to South Africa’s shocking loss to Netherlands by 38 runs in ODI World Cup 2023

Netherlands cause a massive upset as they beat South Africa by 38 runs to win their first game of the ODI World Cup 2023 campaign on Tuesday in Dharamshala

The last time South Africa and the Netherlands played each other in a World Cup was in 2022. The Dutch had beaten the Proteas by 13 runs to dump them out of the World Cup. lightning struck twice for South Africa as they lost their first game of the ODI World Cup 2023 on Tuesday. 

The Netherlands team had won their first game of the tournament by runs in Dharamshala. This loss to South Africa has opened the table with the likes of England and Australia now fancying their chances.

Temba Bavuma had no hesitation in bowling first after winning the toss. Some heavy spell of rain meant that the game had to face a late start. Both the teams made one change to their playing XI’s with the game now being reduced to 43-overs per side affair.

Netherlands stun high flying South Africa –

Put into bat, the Dutch team had to face the strict bowling of the South African bowlers. The pacers Kagiso Rabada, Lungi Ngidi, Marco Jansen, and Gerald Coetzee had the Dutch team in trouble at 112/6.

Scott Edwards then combined with Logan Van Der Merwe to add 92 runs for the 7th wicket. The stand came in just 41 balls to leave Temba Bavuma shocked. Van Der Merwe was out after scoring 29 runs which came off 19 balls with a six and 3 fours.

Aryan Dutt then came in to add more frustration as he swung his bat to score 23 runs from 9 balls with 3 huge hits as Netherlands posted 245/8 on the board. Ngidi, Rabada, and Jansen picked 2 wickets each while Coetzee and Maharaj picked a wicket apiece.

The Dutch bowlers came out on all cylinders firing as they kept taking wickets at regular intervals. Quinton De Kock was dismissed for 20, while skipper Bavuma was sent back for 16. Rassie Van Der Dussen and Aiden Markram failed to get going as they were dismissed early. 

Klassen and David Miller tried to bail their team out of trouble but Logan Van Beek got a huge wicket of Klassen for 28. David Miller tried to forge a stand with Gerald Coetzee but Van Beek went through Miller’s defence to bowl him out for 43. 

There were celebrations in the stand and in the dressing room as the Dutch won the game by runs. This was the Netherlands’s first win of the ODI World Cup 2023 and their third win in World Cup history. This was also the Netherlands’s first win over a Test-playing nation.
