South Africa beat Australia by 134 runs in their second match of the ODI World Cup 2023, on Thursday, at the Ekana Stadium in Lucknow. The Proteas have been in red-hot form before coming into this World Cup and showing a great display of batting and bowling in the marquee event as well. This is the first time the Aussies have lost two back-to-back games in the World Cup after 1992.
Australia won the toss and elected to field first they made two changes in their squad with Josh Inglis and Marcus Stoinis coming in place of Alex Carey and Cameron Green. South Africa came into this match with a huge boost after the mammoth 102-run win against Sri Lanka in the first match. The Proteas were off to a great start with opener Quinton de Kock and Temba Bavuma stitching an opening partnership of 108 runs. Before the latter was dismissed by Glenn Maxwell on 35 runs.
De Kock showed his class once again as the wicket-keeper batter scored another hundred it is his second hundred in the ODI World Cup 2023 with the first one coming against Sri Lanka in New Delhi. The wicket-keeper has been in sensational form. He scored his 19th ODI century and third against Australia.
Aiden Markram also scored a half-century and some small cameos from the middle order made sure they scored 311/7 in their 50 overs. Except for Mitchell Starc and Maxwell, no other bowler could have control over the Proteas batters. The Aussie's World Cup campaign has not started well as in the second match also they missed some vital catches.
Quinton de Kock show in Lucknow
De Kock has been in great touch. Before this World Cup, he announced that he would retire from ODI cricket after the 2023 World Cup. He is well suited to the pitch of Ekana Stadium as he plays all his home Indian Premier League (IPL) for Lucknow Super Giants (LSG). The Southpaw took full advantage of his experience and scored his second hundred of the ODI World Cup 20233. He scored 109 runs off 106 deliveries, hitting 8 fours and 5 sixes. Markram had scored 56 runs off 44 balls that helped South Africa score 311 runs.
In response, the five-time champions were never in the game as the openers Mitchell Marsh and David Warner were dismissed inside the powerplay, leaving them 27/2 under 7 overs. Steve Smith was the next to depart after scoring 19 runs as they were struggling at 50/3 inside the first powerplay.
They were looking good only Marnus Labuschange scored 46 runs and no other batters gave him support as the wickets continued to fall from the other end. The Aussies were bowled out for just 177 runs and with that heavy loss, they are currently sitting at the bottom of the points table.
