After an abysmal performance in the first half of the tournament defending champions England were expected to make a comeback in the World Cup match against Sri Lanka which is looking a depleted side in this tournament with their prominent bowlers missing from the World Cup. But also against a weaker Sri Lanka, the English batting displayed a poor show with the bat and got all out under 34 overs at a paltry score of 156 which is the lowest score for England against Sri Lanka in World Cup history.
Before the World Cup, England was considered to be the hot favourite to lift the coveted trophy for the consecutive time given the fact that the Indian pitches favour the batsmen in a big way, especially in the White-ball format. But England’s World Cup campaign so far has been nothing short of a nightmare. England has won only 1 match so far out of the 4 matches they have played so far and the match against Sri Lanka is a must-win affair for them if they want to keep their World Cup campaign alive.
English skipper Jos Buttler, decided to bat first on a dry Banglore surface expecting to get a decent score on a slow pitch and then roll Sri Lanka over on an even slowish track in the second Innings. England got a decent start of 45 runs as Johhny Bairstow and Dawid Malan were looking good but once Dawid Malan got out it went all South for the defending champions.
Things spiralled downwards for England after a solid start
Joe Root was run out after a mix-up in the middle, and Bairstow tamely chipped to mid-on, before Buttler, Liam Livingstone, Moeen Ali, and Chris Woakes also came and went having hardly troubled the scorers. Ben Stokes put up some resistance with a gritty 43, but he was then caught in the deep, with Adil Rashid then getting run out at the non-striker's end shortly afterwards following a major lapse in concentration to leave England 147 for nine.
David Willey and Mark Wood took England beyond 150, but the latter was stumped after charging down the wicket to end the side's misery with the bat. After England’s dismal batting display, Cricket fans all over the world expressed their views on England’s poor performance. While some were surprised and shocked by the defending champion's performance, some fans took the mickey out of them. Here are some of the hilarious responses of fans over England’s poor performance.
