Angelo Mathews the former Sri Lankan skipper found himself on the wrong side of history on Monday in New Delhi. The 36-year-old became the first batter in the history of the game to be ruled ‘Timed Out’
The incident occurred during the 39th match of the ODI World Cup 2023 game between Sri Lanka and Bangladesh. The manner of dismissal was debated long and hard as the questions on ‘Spirit of Cricket’ arose.
Shakib Al Hasan won the toss and did not hesitate in deciding to bowl first. The New Delhi track has produced high-scoring games during the ongoing 2023 ODI World Cup. Bangladesh made one change while Sri Lanka made two changes to their playing XI.
Angelo Mathews livid after his controversial dismissal
Former Sri Lankan skipper Angelo Mathews strode out to bat in the 25th over at the fall of Sadeera Samarawickrama for 41. The 36-year-old instantly realized that he had brought out the wrong helmet and called for the right equipment.

Bangladesh appealed against Angelo Mathews for timeout and he was given out. #SLvsBAN #BANvsSL #CWC23 pic.twitter.com/Dw7KBCdQN0
While the helmet was being replaced Shakib Al Hasan went to the umpires and appealed against Mathews to be given ‘Timed Out’. Marais Erasmus joined his fellow official Richard Illingworth to contemplate on the appeal.
There has been a huge debate surrounding the veracity of the appeal made by the Bangladeshi skipper. One of the arguments against Angelo Mathews is that he did not take guard within the stipulated time. Since he hadn’t taken guard or made the opposition aware of his need to change his helmet he was liable to be dismissed ‘Timed Out’
The official law clearly states that “After the fall of a wicket or the retirement of a batter, the incoming batter must, unless Time has been called, be ready to receive the ball, or for the other batter to be ready to receive the next ball within 3 minutes of the dismissal or retirement. If this requirement is not met, the incoming batter will be out, Timed out.”
Here’s how the fans reacted:

Shakib did nothing wrong. He appealed for a dismissal which is in the laws. Angelo Mathews would understand there is nothing against the spirit here cos when he was captain in 2014 he also didn't withdraw the appeal when Jos Buttler was mankaded by Sachithra Senanayake.

Today Shakib appealed to give time out to Angelo Mathews, even the delay was due to changing the helmet.
