In the 14th match of the ODI World Cup 2023, Australia beat Sri Lanka by five wickets to register their first win in the ongoing tournament. After a great bowling performance from skipper Pat Cummins, the middle-order batters stole the show with amazing batting performances.
Earlier, after winning the toss, Sri Lanka skipper Kusal Mendis opted to bat first. His decision went well with the team as openers Pathum Nissanka and Kusal Parera added 125 runs for the first wicket. Nissanka, in his innings, scored 61 runs off 67 balls with the help of eight boundaries. On the other hand, Parera, in his innings, scored 78 runs off 82 balls with the help of 12 boundaries.
After a great start, Sri Lankan batters failed to continue the striking rate as Australia skipper Pat Cummins clinched two back-to-back wickets. In the end, Charith Aslanka's 25-run knock helped Sri Lanka cross the 200-run mark, as they scored just 209/10. Meanwhile, Australian spinner Adam Zampa took four wickets, while Cummins and Mitchell Starc got two.
Australian batters step up on the most important occasion
Chasing a below-par total, the Men in Yellow got off to the worst possible start. Five-time champions lost openers David Warner and Steve Smith for a mere 24 runs. Warner, in his inning, scored 11 runs off six balls with the help of a six, while Smith registered a five-ball duck. Dilshan Madhusanka dismissed both at the same time.
However, after their departure, Mitchell Marsh and Marnus Labuschagne added 57 runs for the third wicket. In his inning, Marsh scored 52 runs off 51 balls with the help of nine fours. In the end, a brilliant half-century from Josh Inglis and a quick knock from Glenn Maxwell helped Australia win the game. Inglis in his innings scored 58 runs off 59 balls, while Maxwell in his innings scored an unbeaten 31 runs off 21 balls. It's worth noting that this is Australia's first win in the ongoing ODI World Cup.

That was a strong performance by the Aussies. Still a few issues to solve but a win against Pakistan on Friday and they will be right up there in the mix for a top 4 spot. They haven't played any of Netherlands, Bangladesh and Afghanistan yet.
