In a major blow to Bangladesh’s chances of qualification in the 2025 Champions Trophy, their skipper and premier all-rounder Shakib-al-Hasan has been ruled out of their last World Cup match against Australia at Pune due to a fracture in his left index finger.
Although, Bangladesh have been eliminated from the World Cup after losing the first 6 of their 7 matches still they have a lot to play for as their Champions Trophy qualification is on the line and they have to their last fixture against the mighty Australia to remain in the contention of qualifying for the Champions Trophy.
Bangladesh captain got hit on his index finger during the initial phase of his innings but continued to bat on with the help of supportive tapings and few painkillers and went on to play a match-winning innings of 82 in just 65 deliveries before ironically getting out to Angelo Mathews.
Shakib Al Hasan went for an X-ray after the match in Delhi where the match was being played and after the reports came, it was quite evident that it is a fracture. The recovery is estimated to take at least 3 to 4 weeks. Shakib is set to return to Dhaka whereas the other team members will fly to Pune for their last fixture against Australia.
Timed-Out Fiasco
Bangladesh had an eventful last match against Sri Lanka where they managed to emerge victorious but the ‘Timed-Out’ saga that unfolded in the match outshined Bangladesh’s performance on the field. Bangladesh’s last match got etched in the annals of cricketing history as International Cricket’s first ‘Timed-Out’ took place in the same match.
Being the skipper, Shakib was in the thick of things of all that unfolded as he appealed for the decision to go his way which eventually did. Shakib received a lot of flak from the fans and former plans for appealing for it and in the end the Sri Lanka Lankan team refused to do the ritualistic handshake with the Bangladesh team at the end.
