Ishan Kishan replaces Rahul in Test Championship Final squad
KL Rahul injured his right thigh during a match between LSG and Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 on May 1. The LSG opener rushed to save a boundary hit by RCB captain Faf du Plessis off a Marcus Stoinis delivery in the first innings. Rahul was finding it difficult to walk and lay on the ground for some time in pain. He was then taken off the ground with the help of the team physio.
A few days later, the wicket-keeper batsman confirmed on social media that he will miss the rest of the IPL 2023 and Test Championship final, which will begin on June 7 at the Oval in London.
"After careful consideration and consultation with the medical team, it’s been concluded that I’ll be undergoing surgery on my thigh shortly. My focus will be on my rehabilitation and recovery in the coming weeks. It’s a tough call to make, but I know it’s the right one to ensure a full recovery,” Rahul stated in his post.
The injury to India's senior batter is a major setback for Team India ahead of the marquee event against Australia. Apart from Rahul, India will be without three key players namely Shreyas Iyer, Jasprit Bumrah and Rishabh Pant. Meanwhile, the Indian Cricket Board recently announced wicketkeeper-batter Ishan Kishan as Rahul's replacement in the Test Championship squad.
