Ahead of the prestigious One Day World Cup in India, defending champions England have announced their squad for the tournament. The England and Wales Cricket Board has named a 15-member World Cup squad and three travelling reserves. In great news for the 2019 World Cup winners, star pacer Jofra Archer will be travelling to India with the team.
Archer has been named as a travelling reserve for the prestigious tournament. This will surely boost the confidence and pace of the English team. Archer will continue to work on his elbow injury and would like to make a comeback as soon as possible. It's worth noting that Archer made a comeback in January this year after a long injury, but in May his injury resurfaced again during the Indian Premier League.
Meanwhile, England chief selector Luke Wright said that Archer will travel with the team and work on his fitness. "The best thing for Jofra is to travel with the team, keep working on his rehab, and be around the physios and the team. We are doing all we can to get him ready to be as good as he can be. If there was an injury, he might be able to be replaced at the back end of the tournament, but obviously, we are still working on his fitness day-by-day, and we'll have to keep accessing that", ECB quotes Wright in a press release.
Harry Brook made his comeback in the ODI squad
After being dropped from the preliminary squad for the World Cup, star England batter Harry Brook made a comeback into the team. In a surprising call, the selection committee dropped senior and experienced Jason Roy to accommodate Brook into the 15-member squad. It's worth noting that Brook's performance in One Day Cricket has been below par.
He has failed to score runs in a recently concluded New Zealand series. Brook scored just 37 runs in three innings, with 25 being his highest score. Brook also had a disastrous Indian Premier League 2023 with Sunrisers Hyderabad and has been questioned for his skills and ability to play in sub-continent conditions.
Here is England's final squad for the World Cup 2023:
Jos Buttler (c), Moeen Ali, Gus Atkinson, Jonny Bairstow, Harry Brook, Sam Curran, Liam Livingstone, Dawid Malan, Adil Rashid, Joe Root, Ben Stokes, Reece Topley, David Willey, Mark Wood, Chris Woakes
