India and Sri Lanka locked horns against each other in the first ODI of the three-match series that kicked off on January 10, Tuesday and it was the Indian camp that batted first after losing the toss. To add more, the Men in Blue got off to a good start with Shubman Gill and Rohit Sharma putting on a 143-run stand for the opening wicket.
However, it was the Indian superstar Virat Kohli, who stood out as the best among the top three, scoring his 73rd international hundred, stunning the entire set of spectators who gathered in huge numbers to witness the spectacle unfold right in front of their eyes and eventually silencing his critics. One has to agree that the Indian batter looked in stupendous touch on the day, putting the bad balls away, and maintaining a strike rate of over 100.
India put on massive total in first innings after losing toss
While many opined that the Indian team might have lost the game after losing the toss, the Indian skipper clarified that they were happy to bat first, much to the relief of the fans. Eventually, the right-handed batter Gill made his way back to the dressing room after contributing 70 runs to the scoreboard.
Rohit, on the other hand, looked in fine nick and managed to get 83 runs to his name on the day and put India on the front foot, after toying with the Lankan Lions pacers. While the openers made their way back to the dressing room, the Indian superstar carried on the momentum further and started scoring runs for fun.
Shreyas Iyer, who came in at Number 4, was playing rather aggressively and got out for 28 runs, scoring three fours and a maximum along the course of the same. KL Rahul came in at 5 and contributed 39 runs to the Indian scoreboard, disappointing the fans who hoped for his fifty and his roaring comeback. After scoring back-to-back centuries, the Indian superstar made his way back to the dressing room for 113 runs. At the end of the first innings, India put on 373 runs on the board for the loss of 7 wickets.
