India and Sri Lanka once again went head-to-head against each other in the second ODI of the three-match series at Eden Gardens, Kolkata. Sri Lankan captain Dasun Shanaka won the toss and elected to bat first. However, his team couldn’t vindicate his decision as they were bundled out for 215 in just 39.4 overs.

In reply to Sri Lanka’s total, India got off to a decent start to their chase as openers Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill added 33 runs for the first wicket in five overs. However, they both got out in space of four balls to bring Sri Lanka back into the game. India further lost another wicket on the score of 62 as Lahiru Kumara clean-bowled Virat Kohli in the 10th over of the innings.

Kohli had just gotten off the mark after seven balls as he pulled the previous delivery towards mid-wicket for a boundary. Kumara replied in style on the next ball as he bowled a good length delivery which sharply came back in and crashed into Kohli’s stumps.

Kasun Rajitha further piled on the misery for India as he trapped Shreyas Iyer in front of the stumps in the 15th over to leave them at 86/4. India were 95/4 after 19 overs with KL Rahul and Hardik Pandya at the crease.

Coming back to the first innings, Sri Lanka lost their opener Avishka Fernando early in the innings on the score of 29 as Mohammed Siraj struck for India. From there on, debutant Nuwanidu Fernando and Kusal Mendis took the innings forward with a 73-run stand. The partnership was ended by Kuldeep Yadav in the 17th over who trapped Kusal Mendis in front of the stumps.

Axar Patel struck the third blow for India in the next over as he got rid of Dhananjaya De Silva. Sri Lanka were in all sorts of trouble as the set batter Fernando also got run out in the 22nd over leaving his team on 118/4.

Kuldeep Yadav and Mohammed Siraj picked up three wickets each

Kuldeep Yadav continued his onslaught from the other end and picked up the crucial wicket captain Dasun Shanaka who scored an unbeaten century in the first ODI.

At 152/7, it looked like Sri Lanka will get bundled out under 200. However, some crucial runs by the tail helped Sri Lanka finish on 215 as they got all out in 39.4 overs. Mohammed Siraj and Kuldeep Yadav picked up three wickets each while Umran Malik picked up two.

Meanwhile, Twitter was abuzz with reactions on Kohli’s failure in the second ODI. Here are some of the Tweets:
