The Indian team will take part in the upcoming 50-over World Cup at home and the Indian cricket board is setting things right ahead of the much-anticipated multinational tournament. To add more, the Men in Blue are leaving no stone unturned to get the squad sorted, given team India were knocked out in the semi-finals of the 2019 50-over World Cup and the 20-20 World Cup 2022.

Former Indian cricketer and legend Sunil Gavaskar opened up on squad selection and said that the Indian media should refrain from asking for suggestions on inclusions and exclusions from overseas commentators. Saying that the Indian commentators are more loyal to their country, Gavaskar, in his column for Mid Day, wrote that it would be vital for the media to play a pivotal role in the upcoming season.

For the unversed, the last time India boarded the flight to the United Kingdom to take part in the showpiece event in 2019, Ambati Rayudu was excluded from the squad at the last minute, while allrounder Vijay Shankar was roped in, with selectors feeling that the latter adds more depth to the Indian squad.

Gavaskar warned that it could prove costly for India if the media keep lingering around the foreign commentators, as he requested them to consider asking opinions from veteran cricketers instead. Notably, many former cricketers from the country have been voicing out valuable suggestions time and time again, which were proved right then or later on.

“Hopefully, our media won’t be going to overseas commentators asking who should be picked for India. Never forget that these commentators are loyal to their country and may actually suggest names that may not be what India needs,” Gavaskar wrote in his column on Mid Day.

“Cricket being hugely popular, it is understandable that there has to be some cricket news or the other but it would be terrific if we don’t go around asking foreigners what our teams should be, because then the joke could well be on us, the Indian fans and it won’t be funny at all,” he added.
