Ambati Rayudu, who announced his retirement from all forms of cricket after the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023, is reportedly set to enter politics. Although the former Indian middle-order batter will still be seen in action in USA’s Major League Cricket (MLC), he is rumoured to be contesting the Lok Sabha elections.
According to a report in The Times of India, Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister, YS Jagan Mohan Reddy wants the Hyderabad cricketer to compete in the next pools. This comes after Rayudu recently met twice with Jagan, who is also the president of the Yuvajana Sramika Rythu Congress Party (YSRCP).
Rayudu also praised the Andhra CM, saying, “CM Jagan Mohan Reddy is a big inspiration for youngsters entering politics. He is spearheading development in all the regions instead of concentrating on one area."
The report added that senior party politicians want Rayudu to either contest from Ponnur or Guntur West segments for assembly polls and Machilipatnam for Lok Sabha elections. However, it has not yet been decided whether he will contest the Assembly or Lok Sabha elections.
Rayudu opens up about his 2019 World Cup omission
Recently, in an interview with TV9 Telugu Rayudu opened up about the shocking 2019 World Cup exclusion. The 37-year-old revealed that the Indian Cricket Board officials had told him to be prepared for the major multi-national tournament in 2018.
“The Indian Cricket Board officials in 2018 told me to be prepared for the 2019 World Cup,” Rayudu said.
“I had some issues with the member of the selection committee when I was playing with them in the early stages of my career, which might be one of the reasons why I was out of the team in World Cup 2019″ he added.
Rayudu was assured of the No.4 slot in the 2019 50-0ver World Cup. The right-hander has done everything possible for him to make it to the squad, but nothing went his way. When the MSK Prasad-led selection committee announced the 15-member Indian squad, Rayudu was replaced by all-rounder Vijay Shankar.
