Riyan Parag had a brilliant domestic season, he was the show stealer for the East Zone in the recently concluded Deodhar Trophy. The East Zone all-rounder was named Player of the Tournament after finishing the season with the most runs, the most sixes, and the third-most wickets.

He also took his List to the competition. With a 102-ball 131 against North Zone and a 68-ball 102 against West Zone, he has five centuries. There might have been a third in the final, but he was disqualified for 95 versus South Zone, falling just short of the three-figure score.

People have a problem with me chewing gum: Riyan Parag

The 21-year-old admitted that he is aware that some people are offended by his way of playing and life. Some people criticise him for chewing gum, putting his collars up, or playing golf on his off days. They believe he is arrogant or rude. But he is not bothered by these things.

He cannot understand the reason for this obsession, "People have a problem with me chewing gum. If my collar is up that’s a problem. I celebrate after taking a catch that’s a problem. They have a problem with my gaming and playing golf in my off time."  The cricketer from Assam reasons, "I have an idea why people hate me. There is a rulebook about how you should play cricket. The T-shirt should be tucked in, the collar should be down, give respect to everyone, don’t sledge anyone, and I am completely the opposite."

He explains his actions too, "I started playing cricket because it is fun and I am still playing cricket for the fun part. People can’t digest that I am playing on such a big level, and I am enjoying it. People think I am not grateful."

Riyan Parag made his Indian Premier League (IPL) debut in 2019 at the age of 17 years. He broke the record of Sanju Samson and Prithvi Shaw for the youngest player to make a half-century in the IPL. He also impressed everyone with his bowling abilities, claiming four wickets in 19 games.
