Mumbai became the first team to defend a total less than 200 in the ongoing Women's T20 League after restricting Gujarat to 107-9 while defending 163 runs on Tuesday, March 14. Harmanpreet Kaur's side also became the first team to qualify for the inaugural edition of WTL play-offs with a 55-run win at the Brabourne Stadium. They won all the matches in the tournament so far with huge margins and thus topped the table with 10 points at a net run rate of 3.33. Ticking all the boxes, Mumbai Women's are unstoppable and look set to clinch the maiden WTL title as well.
This is the second time that Gujarat has collapsed in front of Mumbai. The Women in Blue started their campaign with a massive 143-run win over them in the tournament opener on March 3 - which still remains the biggest margin of victory in terms of runs in the tournament. They also produced a commendable 9-wicket win over Smriti Mandhana's Bangalore in their second match. Delhi became their next prey as the Blue Army handed Meg Lanning's side their first defeat of the tournament. Chasing the target of 160 runs, Mumbai defeated UP by 8 wickets and won their fourth win.
Dominating in all departments, Mumbai will be a nightmare for other three teams entering the playoffs. While Nat Sciver-Brunt and skipper Kaur lead their batting charts with 182 and 180 runs from five innings respectively, left-arm spinner Saika Ishaque leads the bowling charts with 12 wickets from five matches and is the currently the Purple Cap holder.
Harmanpreet Kaur, Nat Sciver-Brunt powers Mumbai claim their fifth win
Talking about yesterday's match, Mumbai lost their star all-rounder Hayley Mathews for a 3-ball duck but her partner Yastika Bhatia (44 off 37) put up a 70+ partnership with Sciver-Brunt (36 off 31. Later, their captain scored a 30-ball 51 - her third fifty of the tournament - to put a respectable score on the board. In reply, Sciver-Brunt (3-21) gave her side a cracking start by dismissing Sophia Dunkley on the very first ball of the innings. Harleen Deol's 22 was their top score as none of the other batters could step up for their success.
Let's see how fans reacted to Mumbai's sheer dominance in the tournament:
Funny tournament! Couple of teams are way too strong they don’t let other 4 teams come near them at all , why are they wasting time
