The Women’s T20 League is all set to kick off in a month and the technical bidding saw corporates paying a price amounting to ₹4699 crore to get a team in the inaugural season. Bangalore, Delhi, Mumbai, Lucknow and Ahmedabad used their chance to perfection, landing a team in the dream T20 tournament for women, while Chennai missed out amid huge expectations.
The likes of Bangalore, Delhi and Mumbai were bought by their respective men’s franchises and it remains to be seen if the teams could give it their all in the auction which will reportedly take place in the second week of February. On February 1, Wednesday, the Mumbai management owned by Aakash Ambani made a stunning revelation as they roped in Indian women’s former pacer Jhulan Goswami as the bowling coach.
While Mithali Raj said that she would be considering coming out of retirement to take part in the competitive tournament, there were reports later on that claimed that the star might rather work as the mentor of a particular team and nothing is official as of yet, although Goswami’s news came as a delight for the fans.
Can Mumbai gain glory in the Women’s T20 League as well?
The teams are fastening their strategies ahead of the much-awaited auction and Bangalore might be the front runners as of now to rope in star batter Smriti Mandhana as the latter has always been a fan of the franchise. That being said, Mumbai roping in Goswami could come as a perfect onset for the team to kick off their season in style.
It will be up to the former Indian women’s pacer now to groom the young aspirants who in turn might get into the national squad at the earliest. The Women’s T20 League is one of the most-anticipated and awaited tournaments, given that it broke the records as the teams were bought by the men’s franchises and other corporates for a record total that was more than that of the men’s Indian T20 League.
Here’s how fans have reacted to Jhulan Goswami joining Mumbai as the bowling coach for the inaugural season of the Women’s T20 League:
