India star pacer Jasprit Bumrah has been making headlines for his blistering bowling performance on the field, but since September last year, he has been in the news for an injury update. Bumrah has already missed India's crucial white-ball matches, including the Asia Cup 2022 and the 20-20 World Cup. The right-arm pacer is even set to miss the 2023 Indian T20 League and the World Test Championship final as well.
Bumrah has completed his surgery in New Zealand and is currently being monitored by doctors there. The 29-year-old's injury remains a mystery as the Indian Cricket Board has decided to keep his recovery process a secret. Only a few officials - not even the national selection committee - know the extent of Bumrah's injury and his rehabilitation plan. Only VVS Laxman, the current director of the National Cricket Academy (NCA), and the physios have access to him, according to a report by The Indian Express.
“Not many in the Indian Cricket Board are aware of his injury. Only VVS Laxman has been assigned to speak to him and the physios. Even the selection committee has been told that they will be informed about Bumrah’s actual injury and his rehab details in due course," an Indian Cricket Board official told The Indian Express.
How will India manage without Bumrah, Pant and Iyer?
The speedster is a key member of Team India and his injury has raised concerns about his availability in upcoming mega events - the Test Championship final against Australia and the 2023 ODI World Cup. He was named in the home series against Sri Lanka to make a comeback but was ruled out as he failed to fully recover from his back injury. It is not clear how long Bumrah will be out of action and how the Indian team management will fill his gap.
India have already suffered a major setback as wicketkeeper-batsman Rishabh Pant, who is currently recovering from a road accident in December last year, has been ruled out for the rest of the year. Recently, Shreyas Iyer was also injured and according to reports, he will be out of cricket action for at least five months. India will miss three of their star players when they lock horns with the Aussies in June for the final of the Test Championship at The Oval.
