‘Mil jayegi ticket?’ - Fans react as Gautam Gambhir is unlikely to be part of IPL 2024 due to elections

Veteran Indian cricketer Gautam Gambhir is the mentor of Lucknow Super Giants in the Indian Premier League (IPL). But it is likely that due to the 2023 General Election, he will not be a part of the next edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL), as per reports. Gambhir will not be part of the LSG after being part of the franchise since its inaugural edition in 2022. 

Whereas there have been fresh changes after LSG finished in the fourth spot in IPL 2023. Justin Langar has been appointed as the head coach of the franchise; he replaced former Zimbabwean cricketer Andy Flower in the squad. Earlier, there were reports that Gambhir would be on the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) side as the mentor as the former Indian cricketer has led the KKR side for two championships. In the latest turn of events, former Indian Chief Selector MSK Prasad joined LSG as their strategic consultant. 

Gautam Gambhir has been an MP since 2019

It is pertinent to mention that the 41-year-old has also been a Member of Parliament (MP) in the lower house of the Indian Parliament since 2019. India has a tenure of five years for their elected MPs in the lower house, so Gambhir is likely to contest from his current constituency, East Delhi. Whereas LSg franchise joined the cash-rich league in the 2022 edition when the Indian Cricket Board decided to extend the eight team-league into 10. 

In the end, chances are that due to the general elections in 2024, the IPL may be shifted to any other country, as it happened in 2019, 2014, and 2009. In 2009, the whole IPL was played in South Africa, while in 2014, the first half was played in the U.A.E., followed by 2019 when it was scheduled in such a way that it didn't affect elections. Even if Gambhir does not contest again his popularity will surely be required for the BJP ruled government to gain votes.
