England has proved that they are bosses in white ball cricket at present and that it is very difficult to beat them in the shorter formats. They have had a wonderful resurrection since that fateful day in 2016 when they lost the 20-20 World Cup final to West Indies, having won two World Titles in white ball cricket in 2019 and 2022, respectively.
After Eoin Morgan left the captaincy, Jos Buttler took over the mantle in a smooth fashion and won a 20-20 World Cup in his maiden captaincy stint. In a big similarity to MS Dhoni, who also won the 2007 World Cup when he debuted as captain for India, Michael Vaughan has now drawn parallels between Buttler and Dhoni.
Dhoni doubled it four years later when he played a famous innings of an unbeaten 91 that will be forever etched in the memory of the fans that helped India lift a World Cup title after 28 years at a packed Wankhede Stadium. "Now Jos Buttler has landed the World Cup at the first time of asking and at the age of 32 he has the chance to build his own legacy. MS Dhoni went on for years as India captain. Buttler can do the same, especially now he is concentrating on one format. There is steel there too. You can see it in Buttler's eyes," Vaughan wrote in The Daily Telegraph.
Michael Vaughan backs England to win the 50 over World Cup in 2023
He also said that Buttler can emulate Dhoni’s feat of winning a 50 over World Cup after the 20-20 World Cup come 2023. He believed that England has match winners with lots of all-around options which makes them a hot favourite to clinch the next 50 over World Cup.
"When you have a left-arm seamer, pace, swing and spin, and three spinners you have everything covered as a captain. That for me is the benchmark for white-ball cricket - you have to have options. From 1-11 they have matchwinners," he added. Jos Buttler is known for his calm personality and is labelled as a 360-degree player when he plays his cricket.
