Lionel Messi is reportedly leaving Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) at the end of the 2022-2023 season, which comes as no surprise, given his continuing strains with the French club. The Argentina skipper has decided not to extend his time at PSG, and his future was already in doubt following a suspension handed by the club.

The recent reports come after the popular football journalist Fabrizio Romano confirmed that the six-time Ballon D’or winner will leave PSG at the end of the ongoing season.

"There are no doubts about that anymore. Behind the scenes, it’s now understood that Leo’s father Jorge communicated the decision to PSG already one month ago due to the project. It was the final breaking point," Romano wrote on his Twitter account.

PSG suspended Messi for unauthorised trip to Saudi Arabia

Messi was suspended for two weeks without pay by PSG for taking a personal promotional trip to Saudi Arabia without the club's permission.

“He cannot train, cannot play, and will not be paid while disciplinary measures are in place,” a source with knowledge of the matter told AFP on Tuesday.

The 35-year-old, reportedly, asked PSG for permission to travel to the country, but the club refused. However, the PSG forward violated the rule by travelling on Sunday night, and as a result, the Paris-based club suspended him following a day of meetings between the club’s hierarchy. The 2022 World Cup winner will therefore miss PSG’s next two matches against Troyes and Ajaccio in Ligue 1.

Will Messi join Barcelona?

Barcelona have already begun efforts to bring Messi back into their squad after his two-year deal with PSG expires at the end of this season. The Spanish club are in talks with LaLiga about creating more flexibility in their Financial Fair Play ratio and their spending cap for next season.

If everything goes well, what could be Messi's last year in European football, will be with his former club, where he enjoyed great success. The former Barca star arrived in the French capital in 2021 but has struggled to find his best form, scoring 31 goals in 71 games.
