India opening batter Shubman Gill has been slapped with heavy fine by the Cricket Governing Body for publicly questioning umpire's decision during the recently concluded World Test Championship (WTC) final between India and Australia at The Oval in London. Gill has been fined 15 per cent of his match fee for breaching Level 1 of the Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Officials.

India suffered yet another heartbreak in a major multinational tournament as they lost the 2021-23 WTC final by 209 runs on Sunday. Meanwhile, Team India faced another blow as they were fined 100% of the final match fee for maintaining a slow over rate. The Men in Blue were guilty of being five overs short of target. This means, Gill's effective penalty will be 115%. Australia have also been fined 80 per cent of their match fee for being four overs short.

"India's Shubman Gill will face a sanction for appearing to criticise the decision to give him out on the fourth day of the Test, breaching article 2.7 which relates to public criticism or inappropriate comment in relation to an incident occurring in an international match. The young opener was fined a further 15 percent of his match fee," the Cricket Governing Body said in a statement.

Gill was forced to leave in a controversial umpiring decision

Gill had to depart in a controversial way off Scott Boland’s delivery as Cameron Green pulled off an incredible catch at slips in the second innings. Replays were shown on TV and the ball appeared to have touched the ground, but third umpire Richard Kettleborough ruled the decision in Australia's favour.

The right-handed batter, who got out for 18 runs off 19 balls, took a subtle dig at the English umpire by posting an image of Green's catch with two magnifying glass emojis, asking Kettleborough to zoom it further.

Kettleborough received a lot of criticism from fans, with former Indian cricketer Virender Sehwag also trolling him by sharing a meme on social media. Sehwag posted a picture of a blindfolded man and captioned it, β€œThird umpire while making that decision of Shubman Gill. Inconclusive evidence. When in doubt, it’s Not Out.”
