Australian Cricket Team and its fans were left worried even before the start of the 2023 ODI World Cup. Travis Head, their most consistent player in recent times, had injured himself. This created lots of doubts over the 29-year-old’s chance to be part of the tournament in India.

The situation got more alarming when Ashton Agar was injured. Marnus Labuschagne though has allayed those fears with ease. The 29-year-old from Queensland was added to the Australian squad as a replacement for the left–arm–spinner. Marnus Labuschagne wasn’t originally part of the Australian squad for the 2023 ODI World Cup.

The turning point arrived when the 29-year-old played a match-winning innings as a concussion substitute. This and a few more promising performances prompted the Australian selectors to include the exciting batter in the squad.

Marnus Labuschagne recounts his chat with Australian selectors -

29-year-old Marnus Labuschagne was recently a guest on the Unplayable Podcast. The right-handed-batter revealed have a heart-to-heart chat with the Australian selectors. This chat occurred after he wasn’t included in the original 15-man squad which shocked a lot of fans.

Labuschagne said “I couldn't have predicted how it all unfolded and how it happened, but I was very confident. I did tell selectors when I wasn't included: 'I really feel like I'm the guy for you to bat at No.4. I know I'm not there, I know I haven't performed like I wanted to but I know I'm the person for the job at that spot”

Since that snub, Marnus Labuschagne let his bat do the talking. In the 1st ODI against South Africa, the 29-year-old scored 80 not out to help his team to a close win. Labuschagne came in as a concussion substitute for Cameron Green. This was followed by his knock of 124 in the next game.

The 29-year-old also played well during the recent three-match-ODI series against India. Labuschagne scored 72 runs off just 58 balls in the final ODI which was played in Rajkot. All these exploits have more or less nailed his spot in the side. Labuschagne is now looking to play the first game of the 2023 ODI World Cup against India in Chennai.
