The Indian spinners tore apart the West Indies batting line-up and dismissed them for 114 runs in just 23 overs in the first ODI on Thursday. The Men in Blue started with the pace attack, but realising that the pitch assists the spinners, skipper Rohit Sharma brought in Ravindra Jadeja and Kuldeep Yadav to continue the onslaught. The left-arm spin duo picked up seven wickets combined to quickly end the first innings.
After the Windies top three batters returned to the pavilion inside 10 overs, Shimron Hetmyer and Shai Hope tried to build the innings. But Jadeja, who conceded 20 runs in his first two overs, made a strong comeback by dismissing Hetmyer in the 16th over. The all-rounder, in his very next over, dismissed Rowman Powell before sending back Romario Shepherd in the same over for his third wicket of the match.
It was a great catch by Virat, he had to be sharp: Jadeja on Kohli's catch
However, credit for Shepherd's wickets goes equally to Jadeja and Virat Kohli, who took a stunning one-handed catch at second slip. The former India captain showed excellent reflexes as he dived to his right to send the Windies all-rounder back to the pavilion for a 2-ball duck. Meanwhile, Jadeja did not forget to appreciate Kohli for his incredible catch but also gave an interesting remark.
"Acha lagta hai ki main logon ki bowling pe main catch pakata hun, to meri bowling pe bhi koi itna accha catch pakda hai (Every time I take good catches off other people's bowling, it was great to see someone take a great catch off my bowling for once). It was a great catch by Virat, it kept low and he had to be sharp. He barely had any time to react, so it was a good take. If the bowler has the fielder's support on these types of pitches, then their confidence is really boosted," said Jadeja in an interaction with Kuldeep Yadav after the first ODI.
India won the first match by five wickets with more than 25 overs to spare. Rohit Sharma and Co. will now aim to sweep the three-match series, while the next two matches will be crucial for the hosts. The two will clash in the second ODI on Saturday (July 29) at the Kensington Oval in Barbados.
