Australian spin wizard Nathan Lyon created history on Asian soil as the visitors dominated the first innings of the third Test against India at the Holkar Cricket Stadium in Indore on Wednesday. India, who are leading 2-0 in the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy, elected to bat first after winning the toss in the Indore Test but were crushed by the Australian spinners. In the first innings of the third Test, India were bowled out for 109 runs in 33.2 overs.
Meanwhile, Aussie magician Lyon has now become the highest wicket-taker in Asia as a visiting bowler in Tests. After taking two wickets of Cheteshwar Pujara and Ravindra Jadeja in the first session of Day 1, Lyon added 128 Asian wickets to his account and surpassed the late Shane Warne's record. Australian legend Warne is now second in the elite list with 127 wickets. New Zealand great Daniel Vettori has 98 wickets and is third on the list, while South African speedster Dale Steyn is fourth with 92 wickets.
Aussie spinners demolished Indian batting line-up
Talking about the match, India did not get off to a good start in the third Test as the hosts failed to capitalize on their understanding of spin bowling on a slow track and gave away wickets at regular intervals. India lost the wicket of captain Rohit Sharma (12 off 23) first despite getting two lives in the first over of the innings. They lost seven batters in a span of 26 overs in the first session.
After his poor form in the first two Tests, India took a big decision to drop KL Rahul from the team. Shubman Gill, who replaced the former vice-captain, did well with 21 off 18 balls but fell to Matthew Kuhnemann. Former Indian captain Virat Kohli (22 off 52) was also looking good but was trapped in front of the stumps by Todd Murphy's delivery.
Shreyas Iyer 4 (9) and Ravindra Jadeja 0 (2) had a rough time at the crease as the duo returned to the pavilion early as well. Wicketkeeper-batter Srikar Bharat had a good time at the crease but fell to Lyon's magic as he claimed his 129th Asian wicket and his third of the innings.
