Having already lost the first match of the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy, Australia will be hoping to level the series with a win in the second match. The second match of the series is currently underway at the Arun Jaitley Stadium, formerly known as the Firoz Shah Kotla, in Delhi.

After winning the toss, Australian captain Pat Cummins chose to bowl first in the Indian conditions. They did not have the best start, however, as the bowlers put them under pressure from the start. While Usman Khawaja was a little cautious in his approach, David Warner looked all over the place.

Mohammed Shami drew the first blood as he dismissed Warner (15 runs in 44 balls) for a team score of 50 runs. Following that, it was the in-form Ravichandran Ashwin who put India in a stronger position. He dismissed the danger men Marnus Labuschagne (18 runs in 25 balls) and Steve Smith (0 runs in 2 balls) in the same over.

While Khawaja completed his half-century (81 runs in 125 balls), wickets continued to fall at one end. Peter Handscomb stayed with the tail towards the end of the innings to give Australia some redemption. He hit an unbeaten 72-run knock in 142 balls to help his team score 263 runs in the first innings. For India, Shami took four wickets, while Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja took three each.

India lose no wickets at the end of Day 1

On the other hand, India had a positive start to their batting innings. Indian captain Rohit Sharma began the proceedings with a boundary off Cummins on the second ball of the innings. Along with KL Rahul, the 35-year-old stayed not out as India managed to score 21 runs.

The team led by Rohit Sharma will resume on Day 2 with a trail of 242 runs. The Captain has scored 13 runs in 34 balls that he has faced so far, while the vice-captain has scored 4 runs in the 20 balls that he has faced.  The two will look to continue and build a good partnership from here on Day 2.
