In an interesting decision, the Bangalore franchise of the Women’s T20 League decided to rope in tennis superstar Sania Mirza as a mentor for the upcoming season. Ahead of the inaugural edition of the tournament, the franchise announced it on social media. The team shared a video of the tennis stalwart speaking about her role in the team.
The franchise on Twitter wrote, “The pioneer in Indian sports for women, a youth icon, someone who has played Bold and broken barriers throughout her career, and a champion on and off the field. We are proud to welcome Mirza as the mentor of the Bangalore women’s cricket team.”
In the video shared by the Bangalore franchise, Mirza said, “I was a little surprised but I was excited. Fortunately, or unfortunately, I've been a professional athlete for 20 years. My next job is to try and help young women and young girls believe that sports can be one of the first career choices for them.”
There are so many commonalities between cricket and tennis: Sania Mirza
Mirza further spoke about her role with the Bangalore women’s cricket team. She stated that she will work on the mental health of the young athletes and will help them to handle the pressure. “There are so many commonalities between cricket and tennis. Every athlete thinks the same way, they go through the same kind of pressure. Just handling pressure situations, and embracing them is very important. Pressure is a privilege, if you can't embrace it, you can't excel at it. The biggest of champions are those who can handle the pressure,” said the 36-year-old.
The Indian cricket board announced the fixtures for the inaugural edition of the Women’s T20 League. The tournament will commence between March 4 to March 26 as it will witness a total of 22 matches. The first match of the tournament will be played between Mumbai and Gujarat on March 4 at DY Patil Stadium in Mumbai.
