The FIH World Cup 2023 is ongoing and the teams are giving it their all to clinch the title, India being the early favourites to win the tournament on the back of their squad depth. On January 19, Thursday, the Indian team faced off against Wales and it was the Bharat Army who came out on top at the end of the fourth quarter with a scoreline of 4-2.
As far as the first innings is concerned, it was the Indian team who dominated the initial minutes, eventually creating more chances than the Wales team. However, the first 15 minutes ended with neither of the teams managing to take the lead, although the Indian team were hopeful of clinching a win unlike Wales who were lacking in confidence.
To add more to the second quarter, the first goal for India came in the 21st minute when Shamsher Singh produced one of the stupendous moves to take the lead. It was the only goal in the quarter and it was the Bharat Army who dominated yet again, with fans claiming that it would be an easy walk to glory for India.
The eventful second half proves beneficial for team India despite a fightback from Wales
The second half turned out to be the most eventful one of the contest as goals started coming from all ends. The turnaround came when Akashdeep Singh doubled the lead for the team 2 minutes into the third quarter and the joy lasted until Gareth Furlong scored the opener for Wales in the 42nd minute. Eventually, much to the surprise of the Indian fans, Jacob Draper managed to match the lead in the 44th minute and the third quarter ended with both teams scoring 2 goals apiece.
Much to the delight of the Indian fans, the fourth quarter turned out to be a successful one with Akashdeep managing to put yet another past Wales’ goalkeeper in the 45th minute. The Men in Blue emerged victorious with Harmanpreet Singh converting a penalty corner in the final minute of the game, pushing the team into the crossover face-off against New Zealand.

In Q4 #TeamIndia attacked like a champ. If they can maintain the same momentum, nothing stopping them from podium finish. #HWC2023 #HockeyWorldCup

India has scored 6 goals in the pool matches at the Hockey World Cup, only 1 from a PC (when Wales had withdrawn the goal-keeper). Poor conversion from both PCs & circle cause of concern as India move to knock-outs, NZ match won't be easy either. #HockeyWorldCup

Congratulations India🇮🇳 for 4-2 win against Wales. But India needs to convert those penalty corners into goals otherwise it will be difficult for us to win in knockout matches.#HockeyWorldCup #HockeyWorldCup2023 #INDvWALES

Indian team played well to beat wales 4-2 in the hockey world cup today. The control of the ball acquired via strenuous training was visible. Team was so bad in 80s and 90s. #HockeyWorldCup2023 #HockeyIndia #HockeyWorldCup
