The player draft for the Lanka Premier League concluded on the 5th of July, with all teams completing their squads. T20 specialists Carlos Brathwaite, Dwaine Pretorius, and Imad Wasim emerged as the most expensive foreign players.
Former West Indies T20I captain Brathwaite will join the Kandy Warriors. Dwaine Pretorius, a South African all-rounder who played for Chennai in the Indian T20 League 2022, was signed by Colombo Stars. Imad Wasim, a veteran Pakistan all-rounder, will play for Galle Gladiators.
The LPL 2022 draft included 353 players, featuring 180 international players and 173 Sri Lankans. Colombo Stars, Jaffna Kings, Galle Gladiators, Kandy Falcons, and Dambulla Giants all acquired players from various categories. The virtual event featured 20 categories of players, including International Ruby, Sri Lankan Ruby, International Sapphire, and Sri Lankan Sapphire among others.
The Lankan Premier League season 2022 will begin on July 31st and finish on August 21st. The event has five teams: Jaffna Kings, Kandy Warriors, Galle Gladiators, Dambulla Giants, and Colombo Stars. The event will be held at two different locations: the MRICS in Hambantota and the RPICS in Colombo. Thus far, the LPL has had two editions, in 2020 and 2021, with Jaffna Kings winning both times.
Since 2020, teams from Sri Lankan cities have competed in the Lanka Premier League, a professional cricket league in Sri Lanka played in the T20 format. The league was formed in 2018 by Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC). Ravin Wickramaratne, Vice President of SLC, was appointed as tournament director in August 2020.
