The Ashes 2023 ended in a blockbuster manner with the wicket off the last ball. England won the Test match. Although Pat Cummins-led Australia retain the Ashes after the series ended in a 2-2 draw, England’s star speedster Stuart Broad retired from international cricket after taking the wicket off the last ball of his career to clinch victory for his side. The Ben Stokes-led side won the fifth and last Test of this Ashes edition by 49 runs.
Speaking of the series, it involved controversies and glory moments for different players and sides. From Lord’s Test's long room saga to Broad dismissing Warner for the 17th time in his Test career. The end of the series at Oval was the perfect squeeze of Ashes 2023, with the weather disturbing the play, the home side playing in their ‘Bazball’style and the Aussies attacking with their fierce bowlers. David Warner and Usman Khawaja ended Day Four play of the fifth Test on 135 runs with no wicket loss; on Day Five, regular wickets fell and the visitors lost the game.
As a result of the game, Chris Woakes was named player of the match for his seven wickets and 36 runs in the Oval Test, while he and Mitchell Starc were awarded player of the series for their respective sides. Starc picked up 23 wickets, whereas Woakes dismissed 19 batters in the five-Test series.
The Oval Test explains all the dramas of the Ashes 2023 series
In the end, looking at the fifth Test and how things unfolded for the series decider Test, the Australian side won the toss and elected to field first, and the home side was bowled out for 283 runs on Day one. Australia started their innings and was dismissed at the end of Day 2 for 295 runs.
At the end of Day 3, the English side was 389/9. On Day four the home side was dismissed in the morning session but the last session was washed out, so the Aussies had to chase down the target on the previous day to win the series by 3-1, but the English came strongly after losing back to back Tests in the beginning but won the third and last Test to draw the series.

That is a capitulation from Australia, but fantastic bowling from England #Ashes

Still gutted that Broad’s gone. He invented swapping the bails to take a wicket in his last Test, FFS. He had so much more to give us. #Ashes

From being 2-0 down to drawing level, England's tenacity in this #Ashes series is a tribute to the beauty of Test cricket. The ability to rebound demonstrates the depth of character and the mental fortitude this format demands. Mother Nature might have denied us a series result,… pic.twitter.com/oOn9XgV6BC
