On Thursday, August 31, India football team captain Sunil Chhetri and his wife Sonam Bhattacharya were blessed with a baby boy, in Bengaluru. The boy's name is not known yet and the details are likely to emerge in the coming months. Sources from the hospital and Sonam’s family members confirm that the baby is healthy.

The 39-year-old had announced that he and his wife are expecting a child in style when he scored against Vanuatu in the Intercontinental Cup in June. He celebrated after scoring a goal, ran to the technical area, and gestured a baby bump from the technical area, looking at his wife.

There were concerns when Sonam Bhattacharya was diagnosed with dengue during her pregnancy. Previously he said in the post-match interview, "Me and my wife are expecting a baby, this is how she wanted me to announce - it’s for her and the baby. I just hope we got all the blessings and wishes."

He has been in sensational form with his recent performances in 2023. In the current year, Chhetri has displayed an outstanding style of play. He is the second-highest scorer of all-time with 56 goals in 135 appearances in the Indian Super League (ISL). The Indian football team will miss his service in the upcoming King's Cup, set to be played in Thailand from September 7th-10th, as he will be on break for the birth of his child.

Chhetri, went on to win the SAFF Championship, winning the Golden Boot and the Golden Ball as well. The Kings Cup 2023, which is set to take place in Thailand, will see the Indian team face tough competition from some of Asia's top teams. The tournament will serve as an important preparation for the Indian team ahead of the AFC Asian Cup in 2023.
